Why Buy, What You Can't Tie?

At A.E. Westbrook, every bow tie tells a story and that story began in 2011 when I was a senior at Western Kentucky University. Enrolled in a 300-level entrepreneurship course, I was tasked with creating a product and developing a "2-minute elevator pitch" for a contest. At the time, I was also interning at Dillard's, where one evening before closing, I was approached by a customer who needed help tying a bow tie.

I was surprised to learn that I was the only person in the store who knew how to tie one. As I carefully tied the bow tie on a mannequin, I asked her what the occasion was. She proudly told me her son was getting married the next day and wanted to wear a bow tie. Curious, I asked, "How are you going to tie it tomorrow for the wedding?" Her unexpected answer left me speechless: "You're going to cut the back of the tie, and I'm going to staple it around his neck tomorrow."

I couldn't believe it who pays $60 for a bow tie they can only wear once? That moment sparked an idea: "Why buy, what you can tie?" Inspired, I went home, deconstructed one of my bow ties and a necktie, and studied their construction. From that moment, I started working on my own concept: a bow tie that can be tied once and worn again and again without ever needing to be re-tied. A.E. Westbrook was born from that vision a bow tie that's sophisticated, versatile, and truly timeless. My pitch went on to win a small business grant through the WKU Small Business Incubator, turning my vision into reality.

A Heritage of Design

My love for fashion began early, nurtured by trips to nearby cities with my mom, sister, and aunt. While studying Interior Design at WKU, I gained valuable knowledge in textile sourcing and construction, which further fueled my creativity. With a background rooted in craftsmanship — inspired by my grandmother's auto upholstery projects and my great-grandmother's handmade quilts sewing has always been in my blood.
